ABCD Competition Entries and Winner

The ABCD has been and gone, with pictures taken and submitted.

There were a total of 39 submissions, which I thought was a good number. I would like to thank everyone that took part in the competition and submitted a picture.

What especially pleased me was the obvious effort that a lot of people put into this. Some of the pictures were very creative requiring a lot of thought and planning, and some people travelled a long way to get their shots. Others simply went and stood in the road and that was great as well – taking part was what mattered. Blogging is about communicating and we nearly all use pictures to help us do that, so holding a photo competition seemed like an obvious extension of what we do for our blogs.

One of the people that submitted a picture, WooleyBugger, summed it all up for me when he said that through taking part he has found “a whole bunch of fantastic other blogs to catch up with now”.  I absolutely agree with this. By spreading the word about the competition and getting quite a few entries, I think we have all found something new to interest us in other peoples blogs that we didn't know about before, and I am grateful for that.

Of course, it was also a chance to see what some of our blogging friends look like.

I thought it would be a good idea to include all of the pictures that were submitted. They are all below, in no particular order and I have included links back to the persons blog with each picture.

I have chosen my favourite pictures and they are at the bottom of this post. My criteria for choosing my favourites was simple and was no more complicated than which did I like the best! As they say, the judge’s decision is final.

Here are all of the entries.

This picture is of Geoff James from Coromandel, New Zealand, taken just before a deluge....

This is the entry from Roger Fleming, near Auckland in New Zealand, taken in very high winds....

Richard in Pembrokeshire took a picture of himself on what he calls "my bend"......

Ian Solley reckons there is a tiny part of him reflected in the gauges of his bike.....

This is my own effort, which of course cannot win.....

Despite being affected by the recent storms in Alabama, Eve from Sunny Side Up  managed to get out and take a picture including her green centerline....

Chris Luhman who also goes by the name of "The Stig" put in a picture of himself with his bikes which he uses for Everyday Riding....

Rob Campbell put in a picture of himself and his two sons.....

Doris who will be visiting the Grand Canyon tomorrow sent in this picture of herself ...

Lizzie 'Pepper' Lane submitted a very clever and creative picture....

Steve Williams who rides A Scooter In The Sticks sent a picture of himself prone on the road.  Note the scooter on the side....

This is Linda Lavin standing in front of a tremendous view on  County Route 11 in Bolton Landing, New York....

Taken on Larwood Bridge, this is bluekat who rode over the bridge by bicycle and on horseback as a child....

This is Allen Madding working as a car park attendant at his local church on ABCD....

What a spectacular background Tucson Bonnie found for this picture....

ToadMama had this picture taken of her when on a visit to New York City - what a terrific pose....

WooleyBugger said he chose this location "because like my Sportster it had been left aside for many years until someone decided to breathe new life into it; it's a work in progress"....

In the ABCD post on his blog, Bobskoot posted a few pictures which were all very good.  I liked the fact that he needed a human shutter release (Mrs Bobskoot) to take the one picture he chose for the competition....

Troubadour sent in both an excellent picture and a very funny comment that went with it, when he said "Cagers just don't understand motorcyclists, let alone motorcyclists parked in the middle of the road taking pictures of their bikes"....

This is charlie6 on the Cache La Poudre Scenic Byway.  Some say he looks like a motorcycle cop in this picture, but I am not so sure....

A very creative picture submitted by 4T8Harley taken just off the Pacific Coast Highway....

Brooke Foster posted a picture from beautiful Sedona, which is where she is currently at on her 140 day road trip....

One of the very few night shots was posted by Rex Covington and it was very clever to find a light source to illuminate himself and his bike while keeping the dark sky....

682202 has a picture that captures riding a bike on a wet night.  A great picture GAW....

Submitted by Pat, this shot is simple but very clever at the same time....

The picture by motoroz shows him standing at a crossroadsand the posting on his blog explains why....

That concludes the submitted entries.

As for the winning entries, I found that really hard to judge as there were so many great pictures. My wife Jackie help with selecting the top pictures but it took a long time to eliminate others. For example, LadyR’s picture was a hoot and Tucson Bonnie’s was in a fantastic location. Sonja’s was really sharp with great colours but sadly, none of these made the final shortlist.

I have selected four pictures that shared 4th place and these are......

In equal 4th place, 4T8Harley’s picture of riding around a bend near the Pacific Coast Highway in California. The composition is terrific, as is the way the bike blurs and fades behind the rider. The fact that he is obviously giving it gas going around the bend helps also....

In equal 4th place, Bobskoot’s picture is both great fun and in a great setting. He chose the location well and his size and position in the picture is just right....

In equal 4th place, Raftnn’s black and white picture looking over the raging water is very moody....

In equal 4th place, Steve William’s picture of him laying on the road is brilliantly simple and the yellow of his jacket goes very well with the yellow of the centreline....

In 3rd place, I have selected Rex Covington’s night picture. The way the light from the side highlights the road, Rex himself and his bike while keeping the fading blue sky dark is tremendous....

In 2nd place is G. Wheeler’s night time picture of riding in the rain. It is full of action and speed. The picture just jumps out at you and is deserving of it’s second place....

My favourite picture and the winner of this competition is that by Lizzie ‘Pepper’ Lane. It is one of the most creative pictures submitted and I love the way the bike rider looking back is just out-of-focus, adding to the feeling of distance and remoteness. Pepper and her friend obviously put a lot of thought into this and chose the location well. The final outcome is a great picture that is also funny. Well done Pepper and good luck with your soon to be taken motorbike test....

Pepper, I will contact you about getting the $100 prize to you.

Now a question, do we run this ABCD competition again next year.....?

My Abbey Road ABCD Picture

Okay, as I am organising the ABCD photo competition, I cannot enter a photo that I have taken into the competition, but that didn’t prevent me from taking one.

I took a ride into north London this morning to Abbey Road, where the famous Abbey Road Studios are. These studios are where the Beatles made a lot of their recordings and in particular, the pedestrian crossing outside the building was used for the picture of the Beatles that was on the cover of one of their albums, suitably called “Abbey Road”.

This is my version of the cover of the album, taken this morning, Sunday 1st July, especially for the ABCD competition. There are numerous centerlines in this picture!....

It is actually four pictures and I have cropped myself out of 3 of the pictures and pasted me back into the 4th picture. I used a tripod and my shutter remote control for the pictures.

This is the original Beatles album cover....

I had to wait to take the picture as just as I set up my camera, as bus carrying a lot of people arrived and they all had the same idea of taking their pictures of each other on the crossing....

This is the actual Abbey Road Studios, which is just to the left of the pedestrian crossing behind the low white wall....

In Search of the Sotogrande Sun

One of the benefits of living in the UK is being able to travel to other countries with relative ease. When the weather begins to get you down in London, jumping on a cheap flight to one of many different countries with warmer climates is simple. One country that we enjoy visiting is Spain and so a few years ago, Jackie and I bought a house there, right down in southern Spain, at a place called Sotogrande, in the province called Andalucía.

My brother Tim, with his wife, Oh, live a long way away in Thailand, so we get to see them rarely. They are however, spending a few months working in Switzerland, so are relatively close for the time being. Tim and Oh had never been to our house in Spain, so we just had a week there together. Two of our sons, Charles and Jeremy came along as well, as did Jeremy’s girlfriend, Amy.

Spain became a very popular destination for the British back in the 1970’s when cheap package holidays meant that travelling abroad was affordable for a lot of people for the first time. That soon expanded to people from other European countries holidaying in Spain and many resorts appeared on the Spanish coastline to accommodate all of these visitors. It was the coastline with its very good weather that was the main attraction. Over the last thirty or forty years that expansion was continued and today, most of the coastline is built up. According to Wikipedia, in 2007, Spain became the second most visited country of the world after France when in that year, almost 60 million foreign tourists were received. That has changed and today Spain is the fourth most visited country, after France, the United States and China. Spain is still hugely popular with the British.

About thirty minutes drive from the house is a town called Casares, which clings precariously to the hillside. Casares dates back to the 12th century and was once run by the Romans and Julius Caesar supposedly was cured of a liver complaint here, thanks to the sulfuric waters that still pour out of the local spring. The buildings are Moorish by design and to reflect the heat of the sun, are all white....

While we were there, the wind was strong in Sotogrande and this prevented us on most days from trying out my sons new wakeboard. Jeremy is a keen snowboarder and wanted to try wakeboarding, but the sea was just not quite calm enough to make this possible. Wakeboarding will need to be saved for our next trip.

One of the days we were there, we drove to Puerto Banus for lunch to celebrate my birthday. The port is where the rich and famous gather. The main part of the town is it’s marina where mega yachts are moored....

We found a terrific place to eat on the front facing the marina. From left to right, here are my wife Jackie, Oh and Tim, eldest son Charles, Amy, myself and middle son, Jeremy....

We walked around the marina, peering into its shops where prices are so high, none are displayed. I think as the old saying goes "If you have to ask, you can't afford it".  You can buy a handbag here and pay as much as some pay for a good sized car. We only bought ice creams!

Jeremy and Amy....

The back ends of many boats....

On a different day, we returned to go check out the local street market, near the bull ring in Banus. This was Jeremy, Amy, myself and Oh in a local cafe just before hitting the market....

At the market, Tim and Oh went on a small shopping spree, buying t-shirts and local souvenirs. We spotted the local police motorbikes and posed for a picture. Many of the local Spanish Police are very friendly and laid back, so they didn’t mind....

Not many people would be able to get away from the Police when they ride these bikes....

Back in the port at Sotogrande, there was a classic car gathering taking place. It wasn’t a proper car show, more just the drivers out for a drive and a good lunch....

Adorable car with great colour combinations....

A cracking Mercedes convertible.....

A lovely old Jag....

A very unusual hood decorative figurine.....

I have no idea what car this is, but it is beautiful and was my favourite....

An old classic Ford....

A classic Chrysler....

Great colours and shapes....

To my delight, there was also a small collection of motorbikes, mainly Montessa....

I had seen this custom bike before, at a bike show in London and also in Sturgis. It seemed a little out of place amongst the classic cars and bikes, but I was pleased it was there....

The port in Sotogrande is a great place to show off old bikes....

Lunch in the port for Tim and Oh....

and Jeremy....

For some of my food admiring blog readers (you know who you are), this was Charles' salad lunch. Funny, when a boy he wouldn’t touch anything that was green....

Son Charles in the centre, taller than his Dad (left) and Uncle Tim (right).....

All my sons are taller than me.  That does't seem fair to me.

Due to the wind spoiling taking the boat out, a few of us drove along the coast to Gibraltar. This is a British Overseas Territory and is at the gateway to the Mediterranean Ocean.

Formed mainly of a huge ‘Rock’, Gibraltar was captured by the British and Dutch in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession. Gibraltar determines its own affairs with all local decisions being made by its own Government. National issues like defence and foreign affairs are handled by the main UK government in London.

The Spanish government and people want to take Gibraltar back and for it to once again become part of Spain.  However this is resisted by the majority of Gibraltarians, who want to keep with the current status of being British. It is a sore point between the two nations and getting into and out of Gibraltar is unlike almost every internal border within Europe, with strict controls requiring a passportto get in or out.

Gibraltar is just 2.6 square miles but its strategic position at the entrance to the Med makes it an ideal location for the British Naval base that has been there since 1704. Gibraltar’s main feature is the Rock of Gibraltar, a 1,398 foot / 426 metre high limestone hill, from which views into north Africa as very good.

As we approached Gibraltar, we could see one side of the rock and its top was covered in cloud. This was as shame as the views from the top would be compromised. We rode the cable car to the top and the view looking down into the city wasn’t very good....

It was an eery sight, seeing the cloud blowing up one side of the rock. Note how the right hand side of this picture is in cloud and the left is relatively clear....

The Rock of Gibraltar is home to around 230 Barbary Macaques, the only wild monkeys found in Europe. They are very tame and will approach you and steal any food you might be carrying....

This one seemed upset we didn't have any food....

Charles with a new friend....

They look very cute, but can bite and steal just about anything from you.

We keep our replica AC Cobra in Sotogrande. I love driving this car! Charles adores the car as well and was often seen in it with a huge grin on his face!  He kept asking for the keys.....

Sadly, we were only in Spain for a week on this visit, but it terrific to see so many family members there at the same time.

It is a great place to be able to go there when we can and Jackie and I are lucky to be able to do that whenever we can.

Free Space Shuttle Launch Tickets!

Jackie and I were planning to go see the Space Shuttle Endeavour Launch from the Kennedy Space Center in mid April, but the date has been delayed to 29th April which puts the launch too close to when we have to be back in the UK to start our ride down through France to St Tropez for the H-D Euro Festival. As with all Space Shuttle launches, the date is never guaranteed and could go back even further. We have reluctantly decided that we cannot attend the launch.

I therefore have four tickets to see the launch from the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame and a Guest Parking Permit for the launch. If any of the regular readers of my blog would like to see the launch and can use the tickets for free, then let me know by adding a comment to this post. I will wait 24 hours and if more than one person wants them, I will find a hat and randomly select who gets them.

ABCD - Will You Take Part?

Maybe you would like to join in with this.....

A Bloggers Centerline Day, or ABCD, will take place on Sunday 1st May 2011.

The plan is to inspire as many bloggers as possible to go outside and take a photograph of themselves on this day, wherever they are in the world. The photo can be creative, arty, contain more than one person, be in any type of location and can contain anything else you like. It must however contain the centerline of a road and at least part of you, the blogger.

There are 5 rules....

Rule 1 - the picture must be taken on 1st May 2011.

Rule 2 - the picture must be of yourself, and you must be a person that publishes a blog. You can include whatever else you like in the picture, including other people if you wish.

Rule 3 - the picture must include the centerline of a road.

Rule 4 – you should publish the picture on your blog on 1st May 2011, along with a few words about the picture and why you chose that location or pose.

Rule 5 - when you have posted the picture on your own blog, put a comment on http://garysusatour.blogspot.com/2011/04/abcd-will-you-take-part.html and include in that comment the address of your own blog post containing your own picture.

Gary France will then pick his favourite photos and publish these as being the winners. There will be a prize of $100 awarded to the overall single winner, as chosen by Gary.

In order to get this event known as widely as possible, please copy and paste this posting onto your own blog, including the title. Please do that today!

As a reminder to yourself to take the photo and post it, put an entry into your diary for 1st May 2011.

Let’s see if we can get as any people to join in as possible.

Ride to Croatia

This year, the 20th Annual European H.O.G. Rally will be held at the end of May 2011 in Biograd, Croatia. I will be riding there with Ian Solley of 7Ages Custom Motorcycles. I will be on The Leading Ladies and Ian is taking his Richard II bike, a recently restored 1970 FLH Harley-Davidson.

The route we have planned takes us under the English Channel on the Eurotunnel train, down through France via Reims, Troyes and Dijon before skirting around Geneva and riding across the Alps via Megeve, Albertville and Val-d’Isere, then crossing the border into Italy and riding to Turin, Milan, the Stelvio Pass, Venice and Trieste before heading south briefly through Slovenia and down the Adriatic coast to Biograd in Croatia. What a ride that will be!

Whether we are able to stick to that route depends on the weather as there could be a considerable amount of snow across the Alps and we may need to divert further south to find a warmer route. If we are able to stay with the planned route, it is about 1500 miles from my house to Biograd in Coatia.

The first day we will stick mainly to motorways in order to get as far south as we can, but after that the next four days will be spent riding smaller roads to take as much advantage as we can of the twisty roads through the mountains and rural areas of France and Italy. Overall, we will take 5 days to do the trip, before spending 3 days at the HOG rally itself in Biograd. Neither Ian or I have been to Croatia before, so we are looking forward to seeing what it is like. The coastline we will be riding down in Croatia is said to be stunning.

This is a picture of Biograd....

It should be a great trip!
